Scott Katz by Ruby Kassala
Scott Katz (1979-1983)
He was at the fourty yard line! The thirty yard line, the twenty, the ten... Touchdown! Along with being a sociable and involved Cascade student, Scott Katz was a successful high school and college athlete. Katz attended Cascade High School, one of only two schools in the area, from 1979 to 1983, but he never knew what kind of impact his career at Cascade would have on his future. He moved on to be a successful businessman and raise a family, but he still looks back and remembers the time he spent at Cascade.
Cascade High School, Home of the Bruins, established in 1961, has contributed to the success of many, but the world was a different place back then. Katz recollects how life was when he attended the school. He remembers the good times: "Lots of hugs and friendliness, and cliques were still intact, but I tried to hang out with multiple different groups." Although things at Cascade were going well, there were big issues on the national and global scale. "I remember being terrified that Reagan was coming into office, because people felt that he would be quick to push the 'nuke' button." When asked "would you say that going to Cascade had a good or bad impact on your life?” he answered, “I think it had a great impact on my life. At the time, it was the best school to be at."
Anyone who knew anything about Scott Katz would know that football and wrestling were his livelihood. The school even posted plaques with his name on them on the gym wall. Katz commented on that fact by saying "I am honored that they the school recognizes me in such a way, because to me, it was just my passion. I never thought it would take me so far." Based on his performance on the teams at Cascade, he was offered scholarships at University of Idaho. This set him up for the rest of his life. At U of I, he played varsity football and made it to All American teams. He got his degree in business. None of this would have been possible without the opportunities presented to him at Cascade.
Scott went on from University of Idaho do bigger and better things. He worked at Boeing and in the mortgage industry for many years, and he raised a happy and close-knit family. Despite recent health issues, he continues living a happy life as a hardworking man. He acknowledges that his experience as a bruin contributed largely to his other lifetime achievements. Cascade in the early 80's was the best place for Katz to be while setting up his life as a young adult. His experiences as a Bruin set him up for a lifetime of greatness. Katz is fond of his times at Cascade, the school of pride.
(Editor’s note: Scott Katz passed away in June 2012, just months after this interview. He died a loving, caring man and father and will always be remembered as such. Rest in peace, Mr. Katz.)
