Rhonda Hodgins by Alina A.
Rhonda Hodgins (1982-1986)
Back in the day when our adults were young there was a pretty, blonde girl named Rhonda Hodgins living in Silver Lake, Everett while attending Cascade High and later graduating in the year 1986, when it was the time of “definite groups such as preppy’s, jocks, and stoner’s. I was a jock at the time.” She was and continues to be a very active girl: she was in cross country during the fall and track in the spring, although she “was not involved in clubs such as Band, Deca, etc.” Rhonda was on top of her fashion sense and the styles of 1986 “were tight pants, mostly Levis, oversized sweaters in bright colors, boots, and hairstyles were big perms and the bigger you had it the better. Straight hair wasn’t really in. As for makeup, lip gloss” was the accessory of the moment. At the time, they didn’t have many electronics. Rhonda said that “when I talked on the phone, they were all rotary phones which meant they were push button.” Rhonda is a very hard-working and determined woman, but when she was in high school, she didn’t have a job until after graduation because “they didn’t have any technology to get into that.”
As we asked Rhonda how Cascade was different when she went to school, she said that what we couldn’t leave out was what was going on at the time like national events. This was how Rhonda responded, “Hmm, let’s see Reagan, I guess Reagan had been shot a few years after that and you know I want really into politics. I think we had a republican party at the time…yes, but nothing big you know… no wars or anything.” We asked did it have any effect on her, and she replied, “None whatsoever.” We also asked what were some international events occurring at the time: “Well the big scare was Russia. We were entering the Cold War and so movies were coming out about Russia and how they might bomb us and you know how that might be World War III. So that was what was remarkable at the time.” Did this have any effect on her? “Aside from just a little fear, not much. We didn’t have much of a Ukrainian population or Russian, there were very, very few.”
The final question that ended this interview was how would she rate Cascade High School academics from when you were in school till today? She answered, “Well the rigor is so much more elevated now there are more college level and AP classes. I think the teachers are a lot more rigorous with their expectations and also the state with the WASL and the CE, there was nothing of that sort. When I was in high school, there were some SAT and PSAT testing besides from that there was the amount of credits I needed to graduate. So there was less pressure and academics I think were easy.” Thank you very much for your time Mrs. Hodgins, who is currently teaching Aerobics and Advanced Aerobics at Cascade. She also formed a beautiful family while still living in Everett, Washington.
