Jamie Dawson by Max Duell
Jamie Dawson (Stengrund) (1984-1988)
Born in 1970, Jamie Dawson grew up in the city of Everett, Washington. She was raised by her mother and father Charlene and John. Unfortunately when she was very young they split up and remarried, introducing Charlene and Bill Pope, and John and Laurie Stengrund. During these high school years, the divorce was of course very hard for her and her younger brother and sister. When her dad remarried, she got two half-brothers. They all got along very well in high school, currently they are ages 26 and 23.
While at Cascade High School, Jamie had an interest in soccer, in which she played for the school team. She also took to band; being in the award winning marching band playing flute. The marching band would play for football games and win small competitions. Jamie was a big participant in Cascade’s DECA, which Cascade still has today. As a high school student, Jamie was interested in anything business related, and took many business classes.
The dances at Cascade were similar to the dances Cascade had now, but Jamie didn’t attend many of them. She would rather “hangout with her friends”.
Many stereotypes you see today, you would have seen back then. There were pot heads, punk rockers, jocks, nerds, etc. Jamie was more in the middle.
Cascade’s annual food drive has been going on since 1961, so during the time Jamie was at Cascade she participated in it somewhat.
On the weekend, students from the area would go “Cruising down Colby” on weekends, as a socializing event. Sometimes there was drag-racing, but it was the place to be each Friday and Saturday night. Jamie did this with her best friend in her 1972 Nova, until “Cruising down Colby” started to become old. In high school, she did the typical teenage partying, but still focused on her studies despite her family troubles at the time. Jamie was a good student, and graduated with a 3.8 GPA in 1988.
Jamie’s first job was at Sears, in which she worked for seven years. Apparently, the first few years of this job was more of a socializing event rather than work, since many of her peers worked there was well. Eventually, she started working full time when she started college at Edmonds Community College. She would have loved to go to the UW, but instead got her AA in business.
Following her job at Sears, she moved to California for a temporary job at a temp agency, for about a year. She then worked for Stans City, for four and a half years, and then for Granite Construction for less than a year. Today, she works at a non-profit community campaign center in Santa-Cruz, California. Jamie has been there for eleven years.
Today, she has a family of her own, including her husband Mike, and two children Ashley at 11, and Tyler at 9. Ashley enjoys soccer with her mom being the assistant coach, and Tyler enjoys racing motorcycles and baseball. Jamie meets her children at the bus each day, and helps them with their schoolwork.
During her time at Cascade, Jamie was like most teenagers; not too involved with world events or news. Although, she did know that the 40th president at the time was Ronald Reagan. Her political views stood by Reagan, being a Republican.
Jamie recalls there being a “ceasefire on the Iran-Iraq war” in 1988. There was such thing invented called the UNIIMOG to create the ceasefire. Jamie doesn’t really remember much about this event, but does recall that it happened on the 20th of August, 1988.
Also during this year, the Hubble space telescope was scheduled for flight, and was successfully launched into orbit on April 24th. Jamie felt this was an exciting event, and remembers her and her friends discussing it for a brief period of time.
